THE MOVEMENT IS STRONG SO THE MUSIC IS STRONG
“When the music is strong, the movement is strong.” Harry Belafonte I love this quote! However, I believe it’s the strong movement that produces the strong music. There has been no greater movement and no greater passion than Jesus’ gospel…
REVIEW OF A HOME & A HUNGER: SONGS OF KINGDOM HOPE
Good theology has a way of putting us in the redemptive story. Our theology reveals our hearts, identifies us with the characters in ways that make us think, “I am like him,” and opens our hearts to God’s truth as it moves toward our need.
TAKING THEOLOGICAL INVENTORY OF SONGS
If you have ever seen Georges Seurat’s famous painting, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, at the Chicago Art Institute, or if you have ever watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, then you understand the need for perspective. From up close this painting seems to be a smattering of dots…
THE NEXT WORSHIP: GLORIFYING GOD IN A DIVERSE WORLD
A blog post is not place to do a lengthy book review, but I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to commend a resource to you: a new book entitled The Next Worship: Glorifying God in a Diverse World. This book will benefit any worship leader who reads it.
WORSHIP AND WISDOM
Our instinct in thinking about worship from a biblical perspective is, rightly, to go to the Psalms. But have you ever considered going to Proverbs? Proverbs 8, for instance, is a beautiful passage of scripture that can help us form a holistic view of worship.
THINKING PASTORALLY ABOUT EMOTIONS IN WORSHIP
Emotions in worship are a touchy subject. They’re touchy because, first, worship is often intensely emotional, and, second, many of us have had unpleasant experiences with leaders who have abused that reality. In my opinion, there are two extremes, neither of which are healthy or biblical
HOW THE PSALMS INSTRUCT US
Do you think of the psalms as divine instruction that you must respond to by faith? Or do you typically view the psalms as a conglomeration of songs and prayers? When you read the psalms, do you get the sense that you must respond?
THE CALL TO WORSHIP
The corporate worship gathering is a vital part of the weekly rhythm within the body of Christ. From prayer to preaching to lifting our voices in song, we as worship leaders and service leaders must be intentional with our planning in order that our services help point our people’s affections toward God in worship.
15 DECISIONS WORSHIP LEADERS WILL REGRET
1. Dividing congregations along age and affinity lines.
2. Eliminating choral expressions in worship.
3. Worship leader ageism.
4. Elevating music above Scripture, Prayer and the Lord’s Supper…
A WORSHIP TRUTH FOR ALL TO HEAR
Anyone involved in worship or production ministry is all too aware of the critical role that volume plays in worship services. Can the congregation hear the drummer? Do the people in the back row hear the Scripture reading?
THE PROMISE AND PRACTICE OF "YET"
I don’t have tattoos, but if I were to ink something permanently on my skin, it would probably be the word "yet." These three letters are active with anticipation. And I find this word propels me in conversation and decision-making. It comes up often when reading the Psalms. I will yet give thanks.
WORSHIP IS THE GOAL OF MISSIONS
Jesus is worthy of the worship of all the peoples of the world: every tribe, tongue, and nation; every man, woman, and child. Jesus is worthy of their worship. But there are three billion people on our planet today who do not worship Jesus. Three billion people have never been told the story of the rescuing God.
